MEXICAN COUNTRY HOME

The plans and photos on this page show the home of the Horta family in Tocuaro.
Six people live in the house: Gustavo and Ana Horta, their 4 children, and Gustavo's parents, Jesus and Guadelupe (the children's grandparents).
Gustavo carves wooden masks for a living - the home is used as his workshop too, and the whole family help in some way.

The Horta house is built round a courtyard full of flowers and shrubs.
The old part of the house was built by Grandpa Jesus about 65 years ago - it is made of sunbaked mud, called adobe, and has a tiled roof. It is on the left side of the Ground Floor plan below, and is where the grandparents live.
The newer part of the house has two levels, and is made of brick and concrete - this is where Gustavo, Ana and their children live. Downstairs is the parents' bedroom and shower room (on the right side of the Ground Floor plan). Upstairs there is a living room, a kitchen and the children's bedrooms (on the First Floor plan).

Some rooms are used for making masks and models, and for selling them to local people and tourists.
Gustavo plans to build some more rooms when he has enough money - he has already bought some bricks.
