A pharaoh was a ruler of ancient Egypt .
The word pharaoh means 'great house'.

TUTANKHAMUN
Tutankhamun, the 'boy pharaoh', is the most famous of all the Egyptian king,
because his tomb still contained its treasures when it was discovered.

Did you know that Tutankhamun was only nine when he became a pharaoh?

Tutankhamun ruled from 1347-1337BC.
He was probably murdered!

His tomb was found in 1922 by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. The rooms were full of treasure, like the statue opposite.

HATSHEPSUT

Pharaohs were almost always men, so Hatshepsut was very unusual - she was a female pharaoh! She was crowned king anyway, and was even called 'his majesty'. She wore a false royal beard too! Hatshepsut ruled from 1478-1469 B.C.
